HMB´S REVIEW
VOLA’s new album, Friend of a Phantom, firmly establishes the Danish-Swedish quartet in the progressive metal scene, delving deeply into a sound they've evolved over the years. Since their inception, VOLA has refined their style, moving from the heavy djent of their early days to a more varied, atmospheric progressive sound. This fourth album continues the sonic journey of Witness (2021) but pushes experimentation further, with more intense use of synthesizers and melodic choruses that create a dreamy, immersive atmosphere. Though this album introduces new elements, it still retains much of its predecessor's style. For some, this may represent a continuation of their work; for others, it could feel repetitive (though that’s not my view).

The album shines in VOLA’s ability to balance complexity and accessibility, offering a musical journey that appeals to both longtime fans and new listeners. Friend of a Phantom combines powerful riffs and intricate electronic textures, creating a cinematic vibe throughout each track. In fact, while listening, I kept picturing scenes from Blade Runner, especially those atmospheric street scenes. VOLA showcases a knack for catchy melodies and memorable choruses, blending heaviness and delicacy within a cohesive structure.

The opening track, “Cannibal,” featuring Anders Fridén from IN FLAMES, makes an immediate impact with its strong grooves and contrasting vocals. This energetic start sets the tone for the album, which explores emotional themes and sophisticated soundscapes. Each song has its own identity, yet they all connect into a cohesive vision that reflects the band’s commitment to their creative process.

In Friend of a Phantom, VOLA embraces diverse influences, including alternative rock and an ‘80s pop sensibility (with Blade Runner having released in 1982, it’s no wonder it came to mind). These influences add a layer of accessibility without sacrificing the album’s progressive complexity. The refined production and careful arrangement make every layer—synths, vocals, and percussion—stand out, creating a unified album that flows seamlessly from beginning to end. VOLA’s precise use of technology and skill in crafting vivid soundscapes make this album a rich, absorbing experience.

With Friend of a Phantom, VOLA strikes a rare balance between experimentation and structure, delivering an album that’s both intensely emotional and technically outstanding. This release not only reaffirms VOLA’s position as one of the most innovative bands in progressive metal but also stands as one of the defining works of 2024, capturing the essence of a band that continues to expand creatively without compromising their core identity.
